Flax seed mucilage is rich in water-soluble polysaccharides. When applied to skin, these form a soft, hydrophilic film over the surface.
For eczema-prone skin, that can be valuable because the stratum corneum often has impaired barrier function. Water escapes more readily through the skin (increased transepidermal water loss, or TEWL) and the skin consequently becomes dry, tight and more susceptible to irritants. Barrier dysfunction is a central feature of atopic dermatitis.
