Grapeseed oil and jojoba oil are both excellent skincare ingredients, but they have very different compositions and therefore different strengths. In many formulations, they complement each other well.
Grapeseed Oil (Vitis vinifera Seed Oil)
Grapeseed oil is a lightweight plant oil extracted from the seeds of grapes, typically as a by-product of winemaking.
Key properties
- Very lightweight with a dry, silky finish.
- Fast absorbing, making it suitable for oily and combination skin.
- High in linoleic acid (Omega-6), typically 60–75%.
- Contains smaller amounts of oleic acid (Omega-9).
- Naturally contains Vitamin E and plant polyphenols.
Skin benefits
- Helps support the skin barrier without feeling greasy.
- May help reduce moisture loss by softening the skin.
- Particularly suitable for acne-prone skin because linoleic acid levels in sebum are often lower in people with acne.
- Leaves a smooth, non-sticky finish.
- Can improve spreadability in creams, lotions and massage oils.
- Provides antioxidant support through naturally occurring tocopherols and phenolic compounds.
Best suited for
- Oily skin
- Combination skin
- Acne-prone skin
- Normal skin
- Lightweight facial oils
- Massage oils requiring quick absorption
Considerations
Because of its high polyunsaturated fatty acid content, grapeseed oil is more prone to oxidation than oils rich in monounsaturated fats. Including around 0.2–0.5% mixed tocopherols (Vitamin E) can help improve oxidative stability.
Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia chinensis Seed Oil)
Although commonly called an oil, jojoba is actually a liquid plant wax ester, making it unique among cosmetic oils.
Key properties
- Extremely stable against oxidation.
- Long shelf life.
- Medium-light skin feel with excellent slip.
- Forms a breathable protective layer on the skin.
- Chemically similar to some of the wax esters naturally present in human sebum.
Skin benefits
- Excellent moisturising and conditioning properties.
- Helps reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
- Softens rough or dry skin.
- Suitable for sensitive skin due to its gentle nature.
- Adds luxurious glide to facial oils and massage products.
- Stable enough to help improve the overall stability of blended oils.
Best suited for
- Dry skin
- Sensitive skin
- Mature skin
- Combination skin
- Facial oils
- Beard oils
- Hair care products
- Lip products
Considerations
Jojoba absorbs a little more slowly than grapeseed oil but leaves a smooth, elegant finish rather than a heavy or greasy feel.
