How good is natural sunscreen?

It's a well known fact that leaving your skin exposed to the sun's UV rays can cause long term issues, and even skin cancer. Dermatologists worldwide always advise the use of an effective sun screen in the sun, and suitable protective clothing to reduce exposure to the most harmful UV rays.

The problem is finding sun protection that is both effective and natural, without nasty additives, petroleum derived ingredients, or palm oil, to name but a few. Generally, High Street brands contain very little that is truly natural, and many "natural" alternatives are not as effective as they could be. The challenge therefore is to combine great sun protection with natural, plant derived, and ethically sourced ingredients.

A good natural sunscreen, such as the natrl Sunscreen Stick combines the natural SPF of a range of plant oils and minerals, to create an effective barrier, whilst protecting, moisturising, and conditioning your skin.

There are several plant oils that offer natural SPF. The list below has selected oils with their SPF factors*, which you will find surprising:

Red Raspberry Seed Oil - SPF 28 to 50

Carrot Seed Oil - SPF 30 to 40

Wheatgerm Oil - SPF 20

Olive Oil - SPF 2 to 15

Avocado Oil - SPF 4 to 15

Shea Butter - SPF 3 to 6

By combining several oils a more balanced SPF can be achieved, whilst feeding the skin to protect against damage, dryness, and blistering.

Including Zinc Oxide in a sunscreen formulation brings a sun reflectant into play, which further improves the product's effectiveness. You should, however, check that any Zinc Oxide additive is of the "non-nano" type, which doesn't harm the environment and is reef safe.

The additional benefit of a natural sunscreen stick is that it doesn't leach harmful chemicals into the water system, which can occur with regular sun creams and lotions when bathing. It should be used in the same manner though, with reapplication afterr bathing or an extended exposure to the sun.

Spending too long in open sunshine isn't healthy for your skin, but at the same time sunshine is necessary in the production of Vitamin D, which is vital for healthy bone development, strong teeth, and a well functioning immune system.

In conclusion, you don't have to forego effective sun protection in the pursuit of a natural solution. Buying a qualityt natural plant based sunscreen will give adequjate protection in most circumstances but cannot be fixed as without gthe dfown side of applying nasty chemicals to your skin, environmental damage, and plastic waste.

* All quoted SPF factors are based on research but, due to the variances in seed strain and crop conditions, cannot be guaranteed. Hence the variables.
